Boland Super Series Race #3 26th June 2010

Charles Keey raced the 3rd leg of the Boland Road Super Series held on Saturday the 26th of June over 25 laps of a very testing 4.5km circuit, in windy conditions. Attendance for winter road racing is never high although about 30 riders lined up on the start line including 8 Cape Town Market riders. The pace was furious from the line with the Cape Town Market riders using their numerical advantage to the max. After the first couple of laps the bunch was down to about 10 when one by one Anton Wynand, Tredoux Odendaal and Stefan Ihlenfeldt, all Cape Town Market, managed to break away and started working together. Their advantage quickly grew to a couple of minutes with only Charles Keey (Blend Properties), Hannes Basson (Cycle Lab), Victor Grobbelar (Cycle Lab) and one other rider working to pull them back. With 6 laps to go the chasers gained some momentum and started to bring down the time gap, while the 3 leaders were taking strain and began to split up. As the laps counted down so did the leaders advantage, until with 1 lap to go it was just Charles and Stefan in the lead. As Stefan is one of the best sprinters in the Cape Charles attacked him numerous times but couldn’t shake him. With Stefan’s team mates not far behind Charles had to keep the pressure on while Stefan had a free ride to the finish taking the sprint.
