Up, Down and Around Again for Charity

On Saturday I took part in the second Webber Wentzel Platteklip Charity Challenge. Between the 70-odd particpants, we managed to raise approximately R550 000!!

The task was to see how many times you could climb Platteklip Gorge in one day, taking the Cable Car down each time and running back along Tafelberg Road.

The average number of laps per person was 5. I had been challenged to do 8 laps, but ran out of time (and legs) so only managed to do 7. That's approximately 5300m vertical ascent - just 500m shy of Kilimanjaro.

Tatum Prins, of Adventure Racing fame, did the most number on the day, totalling 9 ascents! Another winner on the day was 17yr old Danny Matthews who had signed up to do only 3 laps, but by the end of the day had completed 8!!

The biggest winners, however, were the kids from the Masikulisane Crèche for whom we were raising the money. A small group of the kids came to support us, shouting and screaming, cheering us on. Then they got the opportunity to ride the Cable Car and play on the top of the mountain. Oh the excitement!!

For those of you who don't run, but who would be keen to raise funds for a worthy Charity, check out the BEN Red Hill Charity Challenge happening on the 23rd May 2010...
